Between Two Realms: Tenzin Choegyal with Wytchings

Saturday 17 January 7:30pm (70 minutes)

Embark on a transcendent musical journey with Between Two Realms, a new co-creation by exiled Tibetan singer-songwriter Tenzin Choegyal and Western Sydney creative Jenny Trinh (Wytchings). Featuring Tenzin’s soaring vocals, unique instrumentations and spoken word along with Wytchings’ hauntingly beautiful soundscapes, this performance blends structured sounds with spontaneous elements.

Inspired by the concept of Bardo - the liminal state between death and rebirth – In Bardo expresses the power of compassion, interconnectedness and the cycle of life, all central to Tenzin’s spiritual and musical practice. In Tibetan philosophy, the Bardo state exists in momentary gaps between thoughts or actions. It is said that enlightenment is experienced in moments of Bardo but those fleeting insights are quickly forgotten - gone ‘like a bubble in a stream’.

Although from widely differing backgrounds, Tenzin and Jenny come together with a seamless, richly layered blend of music, song and spoken word which leans on their diverse musical experiences and rides upon the soundscape created by Wytchings.

Be transported to the vastness of space and the beauty of the high Himalayan plateau in this convergence of stories, places and creative practice, celebrating the joy of living and dying. The result is an unforgettable and moving experience for all.

Tenzin Choegyal, artist, composer, musical director and cultural ambassador feels a particular connection to the music of the Himalayan plateau. Born in Tibet, exiled in India and now living in Australia, Tenzin channels the wisdom and traditions of his Tibetan ancestors through his extraordinary vocal performances and mastery of the lingbu (bamboo flute) and dranyen (3-stringed lute).

Tenzin recalls hearing his mother’s early morning mantras and the evening sounds of his father’s flute, and attributes much of his passion to those early influences.

Since his Australian debut in 1997, Tenzin’s soaring vocals and sublime flute solos have thrilled audiences around the globe, including performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall. His unique style embraces meditative mantras, spoken word and original compositions infused with the essence of Tibetan wisdom and a sound as expansive as the Himalayas.

Tenzin also embraces opportunities to take his music away from the traditional and into uncharted territory.

In collaboration with musicians from diverse cultures, traditions and genres, he explores musical horizons from indigenous to classical to contemporary, all the while remaining true to his nomadic roots.

Tenzin’s creative collaborations with Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson and award-winning string ensembles, have continued to break new ground and inspire new works, including his Grammy-nominated album Songs from the Bardo - a moving interpretation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead - and his 2024 album Whispering Sky, which brings together an international cast of collaborators from across 4 continents.

Tenzin sees music as universal, expansive and spontaneous, “like drifting clouds that fly freely over the man-made geographical borders in this infinite space of possibilities”, and he views himself as a storyteller, sharing his own story, the communal story of his people and the stories of all humanity.

Tenzin’s performances have become a platform to reach out to the global audience and draw attention to the rich heritage of his homeland and the contemporary challenges faced by his people. “Through my music I try to let Tibet sit in the minds of people, believing that somehow music has that power.”

For Tenzin music is life, no matter where he is. “My music has evolved through my own journey from Tibet to India to Australia and around the world. But wherever I am in the world, my music also connects me to my homeland of Tibet.”

Tenzin Kunsang is a singer, dancer and multi-instrumentalist. A second-generation Tibetan refugee, Kunsang was born in Dharamsala, India, and has lived in Nagano, Japan since 2010.

Kunsang studied traditional singing, dance, opera and instrumental performance at the prestigious Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA), one of the first institutions established in exile by the H.H. Dalai Lama. He now regularly tours Japan and internationally, either solo or with one of his three bands.

Kunsang performs vocals and plays the damnyen, erhu, bansuri and other traditional instruments and, as part of the multi-ethnic performing arts group WATARA, skilfully fusing Japanese, Korean and Tibetan music and dance.

In 2016, Kunsang performed at the opening ceremony of the Tibetan Exhibition at the National Palace Museum in Taiwan and in 2017 released his first solo album Prayers of Snow Lion, Sounds of Wind Horse.

As well as performing, Kunsang also takes part in talks about the Tibetan spirit and the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism.

Kunsang also manages the Tashi Damnyen Tibetan Traditional Music School in Tokyo, where he teaches damnyen (a Tibetan string instrument), singing and dance.

Wytchings is a project from Western Sydney artist, Jenny Trinh. Growing up, she would often be found in the art room, headphones on and doodling until the blank pages of her sketchbook were filled up. Those times with her head in the clouds always brought her comfort – she has always been enamoured by the teleportive nature of music.

In 2018, she participated in New Age Noise (formerly known as All Girl Electronic) where she explored electronic music production properly for the first time, creating dreamy, film-inspired sounds evoking that of space and water.

She has performed at a variety of shows from debuting at 2019’s ‘Club 4A’ to 2022’s ‘Essential Tremors’ at Phoenix Central Park, curated by Liars’ Angus Andrew.

She has also been featured in publications such as VICE and Push Magazine, contributed to compilations by the likes of SYS Sister Sounds and New Weird Australia, and has reworked tracks by artists like Bluetung.

Furthermore, she has collaborated with a number of otherworldly artists like Red Rey, Leeroy New, Sile Ellis & Jada Narkle to create accompanying soundscapes for their movement pieces, which have been showcased during programs including Soft Centre, Sydney World Pride, Yirramboi Festival and Marrugeku. In addition to that, she has done original sound design for ‘Liquid Homelands’ as part of FBi Radio’s Race Matters program as well as for Carielyn Tunion’s ‘i am a deepsea fisherwoman, but i do not catch fish’ as part of TENDER at the Sydney Opera House.

Her debut EP ‘Neptune’ was released in 2019 and her second EP, 'Oculus’ was released in winter 2020 via Lazy Thinking Records. The final chapter of her 'Neptune’ trilogy – 'Psamathe’ was released in spring 2022, and it features the single “Fata Morgana” which was nominated for 'Song of the Year’ at the FBi SMACs Awards 2022 and part of the Wettest 100.

In addition to her solo work as Wytchings, she is also in two bands: Heart Armour featuring Kashif (Kash Bhai) & Zac (roomers) as well as Worlds Only featuring Alister Hill, Darren Lesaguis, Justin Tam (Tzekin), Reginald Harris, Thomas William Smith (T.Morimoto) & Mara Schwerdtfeger. <3
